Examples of the distictive differences between the markings of 36 artists from the period 1900 to 1907. For most it possible after a while to recognise their “hand” , even if there is no monogram of only part of the markings. While markings tend to change over time for practically all artists this is normally gradually and this can even help to date objects. For a small minority of artists the markings show a large “artistic freedom” or simply a lousy handwriting that varies wildly. But in most cases the personal style does reveal the identity of the artist.
