Cornelis Arnoldus Jacobus Hornis was born in 1885 in Gouda as son of a pottery maker, later supervisor and trader. His father died 10 years later and Cornelis and his siblings continued to live with their mother. In the Civil Registry 1900-1922 he appeared as a ceramics painter. It seems this was entered immediately when the register was compiled between 1900-c1902, which is supported by the fact that he started at the Evening School for Craftsmen in 1898. straight after primary school. He left Gouda in February 1911 for Nijmegen but returned to Gouda in March 1912. His last move was to Nijmegen in January 1921 where he passed away on 26 March 1938, his profession is then stated as a grocer.
